Luke 9:46-62
by Andrés Chinchín
“And as Jesus said unto him, forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us” (Luke 9:50).
In the prayer of the Lord’s Prayer, the catechism teaches us in the first petition, “hallowed be thy name.” This means that, although the name of the Lord is certainly holy, we must pray that it may be preserved as such and be treasured among his followers—through their lives, testimonies, and teaching—, and in that way the world may see and believes in him.
This is how in the places where the name and power of God is preached and honored, even with certain simplicity, Jesus is honored. As the German theologian Bonhoeffer (1955) put it, “We must not interfere, but allow the name of Jesus Christ to do its work…[even] in our day, Jesus exercises an unforeseen power…and whenever his name is spoken it is a protection, an affirmation [of his power]” (p. 59).
Food for thought:
In what area of your life is the name of the Lord not being exalted?
Prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name…
Amen
